About LAMY

The launch of the LAMY 2000 Fountain Pen in 1966 was a defining moment in LAMY history. Though the LAMY name first appeared in 1952, the arrival of the LAMY 2000 defined the pen maker in a way that still holds true today.

Designed by Gerd Alfred Müller, the LAMY 2000 was shaped by the Bauhaus philosophy, “form follows function”, the practical simplicity of the fountain pen became the foundation upon which LAMY’s clear, essential design language still rests more than 55 years later.

If the LAMY 2000 was a big milestone for the brand, the arrival of the LAMY safari in 1980 was a landmark for the entire pen industry. Designed with schoolchildren in mind, the safari’s rugged ABS body and ergonomic grip quickly made it the world’s best-selling fountain pen.

Alongside new developments in writing instruments, LAMY has continued to innovate behind the scenes. With an ever-advancing factory system that means roughly 95% of production happens on-site, including the capacity to produce its own ink, LAMY is always working on ways to improve.

Made in germany

It’s a mark of pride for LAMY that so much of the range is produced at the Heidelberg location. Every plastic part (including ink cartridges) is made on-site in LAMY’s impressive injection moulding hall, and all ballpoint refills and fountain pen nibs are made in Heidelberg.

And even as LAMY introduces new technologies to increase reliability and consistency, huge amounts of the pen-making process is still done by hand. About three quarters of the time required to make a given LAMY pen goes into manual work, which allows LAMY to offer an exceptional level of care and attention to each pen. LAMY nibs are all ground and polished by hand in Heidelberg, and sophisticated pens like the LAMY 2000 are assembled in full on-site.
 

That human touch also allows LAMY to offer a level of quality control that would be unimaginable to other brands. With so much produced within the same facility, each pen can be inspected by experienced team members to make sure that the colour, finish and functionality live up to LAMY’s high standards.

Design and Sustainability

The durable design of the LAMY range delivers pens that are anything but disposable. Well-constructed, elegant and a pleasure to hold, LAMY writing instruments offer a lifetime of enjoyment, which also helps to reduce the volume of single-use pens that end up in landfill.

Being able to say that LAMY products are “Made in Germany” is more than just a badge of local pride. Producing the vast majority of LAMY products in-house not only allows a level of precision and quality control that’s beyond most manufacturers; it also allows LAMY to cut down on carbon produced by shipping components, manage the energy sources that power the factory, including regenerative sources and reusing the heat generated from production to power other aspects of the facility.
 

That close integration also benefits LAMY in the development side, making it easier to plan the use of resources more carefully, and to regularly review the use of recycled materials in production. And when LAMY products leave the factory, they’re shipped in eco-friendly packaging, with cardboard materials made from recycled paper.
